Standing stone in Raheennamadra

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Westropp measured a large stone near the ringfort in 1917, yet no trace remains visible in modern satellite images. The disappeared marker may have been buried, broken or removed after people stopped needing it. What is left is a gap where a stone stood, holding the shape of a forgotten boundary or bargain.
In pasture, 60m E of townland boundary with Mitchelstowndown North. A ringfort (LI041-013011-) and barrow (LI041-013008-) lie 60m and 45m respectively to the NE. Not depicted on OSi historic maps. Described by Westropp (1917-19, 67) as ‘120 yards [110m] from the fort [LI041-013011--], is a large stone over 4 feet [1.2m] long, 3 feet high [0.9m], and 3 feet 6 inches thick [1m].’ No surface remains visible on Digital Globe orthoimage taken between 2011-13 or on Google Earth orthoimages. See attached plan taken from Westropp (1917-19) and Google Earth orthoimages. Compiled by: Fiona Rooney Date of upload: 29 July 2021
Probably dating to the Bronze or Early Iron Age, this standing stone may have had ritual or territorial significance, possibly linked to the nearby ringfort and barrow. Such stones often feature in local folklore as markers of ancient power or as sites of spiritual activity.
