Killountain holds a 1.9m stone beside the Bandon river. Men pulled it from flat farmland in 1980, found a buried pit nearby, and carried it three hundred metres east to stand on the river bank. The field gave up one of its dead and returned a marker for the water's edge.
In flat tillage c.100m S of Bandon river. Discovered 1980 during land reclaimation; only upper 0.5m of stone then visible. Stone subsequently removed from ground (H 1.9m; 0.9m x 0.5m); adjacent pit burial(CO110-006---) on S side (Shee-Twohig and Doody 1989, 5255). Stone re-erected in 1983, c. 300m to NE on river bank.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

Probably dating to the Neolithic or early Bronze Age, this standing stone may have had ritual or territorial significance, possibly linked to the nearby pit burial. Its removal from the ground suggests it was once part of a wider landscape of ceremonial or funerary monuments.
