This black commemorative plaque records: St. Thomas Chapel. Chapel of St Thomas the Martyr (Archibishop Thomas Becket, died 1170) stood on Old Tyne Bridge near this spot, until 1830, when it was demolished for road widening and replaced by St. Thomas' Church in Barras Bridge. Recorded plaque organisation: City of Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear County Council.
St Thomas Chapel commemorated Archbishop Thomas Becket, an important medieval church leader assassinated in 1170; the chapel stood near Old Tyne Bridge until 1830 when it was demolished to widen the road and later replaced by St. Thomas' Church in Barras Bridge.
