St. Patricks Well

Located at the bottom of a S-facing slope and on the floodplain of a SW-NE section of the River Boyne c. 120m to the SE, and c. 700m W of the town. This is thought to be the location where St Lommán baptised Foirtchern, the son of Feidhlimidh and grandson of Laoghaire, the king of Tara (Athey 1955). It is described as St Patrick’s Well in gothic lettering on the 1836 and 1912 editions of the OS 6-inch map but it does not survive at this location. St. Patrick's Well at Crowpark is associated with St. Lommán, a 7th-century Irish monk and disciple of St. Columba, who is said to have baptised Foirtchern at this site. The well reflects early Christian traditions in Ireland, where holy wells were often linked to saints and used for baptismal or healing rituals.
