West Carlow road, St. Mogues Well and Cross mark an abbey lost before memory. Two granite crosses still stand beside nineteen re-erected grave slabs, their relief crosses worn shallow by rain and handling. The east cross survives in fragments, its wheel decorated with small wheeled crosses, while the west cross remains plain and massive. A holy well and bullaun stones complete the place, suggesting prayer continued long after the church disappeared.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 26 May 2011 Revised by: Claire Breen Associate with St Mochta or St Mogue. Present remains consist of two large granite solid-wheeled crosses, large collection of cross-inscribed stones, holy well, and two bullaun stones. West Cross (CW009-028004-): undecorated granite, with solid wheel; East Cross (CW009-028003-): now in fragments, head with solid wheel decorated with small wheeled crosses in medallions in relief at centre of wheel, on both faces. Nineteen cross-inscribed stones from graveyard are now re-erected together. These include a medieval grave stone with tree of life motif now obscured by crude nineteenth-century inscription, the head of a ringed cross and a number of slabs with crosses in relief and false relief. Worn granite slab appears to have interlaced cross on one face and eighteenth-century inscription on reverse. OS Letters record local account of ruined church with entrances in W and E gables standing close to cross to N of road (OSL 1837, 113). Granite font described by Fitzgerald (JKAS 1912-4, 132-1) probably refers to a base for one of the crosses. Not located. Slab with cross in relief, incorporated in passage roof at nearby Clonmore Castle (CW009-026001-) probably originated from here. (OSL 1837, 112-4, 118; JKAS 1913, 138-42)
