At crossroads; T-shaped with stem to E. Entered at E end, interior lit by slender pointed lancets with switchline tracery. Mosaic reredos behind altar at W end. Bellcote atop E gable rising from narrow stone breakfront framing front door; stone plaque over door inscribed 'MAY 1843'. Similar inappearance to nearby Grenagh church (9594). 1842 OS 6-inch map shows structure to N of crossroads in adjacent townland of Monaparson named 'Athnaleanta R.C.Chapel (Old)' which no longer survives; it was described in 1845 as 'an oblong thatched building in very bad repair, capable of holding about 500 persons' (Uí Mheiscill 1990, 141). St Michael's Cathedral at Garrynagearagh was built in the late 19th or early 20th century in a Romanesque Revival style, featuring a T-shaped plan and notable mosaic reredos. It is dedicated to St Michael and serves as a significant ecclesiastical landmark at a crossroads.
