St Michael's Mount Castle rose from a small eighth-century monastery into a tidal fortress where the St Aubyn family still guards ancient stones. Sir John St Aubyn defended the Mount for the crown during the English Civil War, while earlier troops held it against Edward IV during the Wars of the Roses. Tradition claims Jack the Giant Killer later destroyed the giant Cormoran in a dug pit, giving the island its enduring mystical aura.
