St Mary's Well is associated with the veneration of the Virgin Mary, a common feature of many holy wells in Scotland and Ireland. Traditionally, such wells were visited for healing purposes, particularly for women's health issues, and were often marked by rituals such as pouring coins into the water or walking sunwise around the site.
