St Mary's Priory is associated with a medieval Augustinian priory dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and local tradition suggests the site may have been a place of pilgrimage and healing. Holy wells or sacred springs near such priories were often linked to Marian devotion and the curing of ailments through ritual washing or prayer.
