St Kilda, Hirta, is associated with St Columba, who is said to have visited the remote archipelago in the 6th century, and St Columba's Church reflects the early Christian influence on the island. Local tradition holds that St Columba blessed the island, and its people and wildlife were believed to be under his protection.
