This blue commemorative plaque records: St. Joseph's. Built in 1806 before the Catholic Emancipation of 1829. Replaces mission church St. Michael of Carleton Green, founded about 1685 by Father Hammerton S.J. of Purston Recorded plaque organisation: Rotary International.
St. Joseph's in Pontefract was built in 1806 for a growing Catholic community before the Catholic Emancipation Act of 1829; it succeeded St. Michael of Carleton Green, established around 1685 by Father S.J. Hammerton to serve Catholics during penal times.
