On Oileán Ealtanach, now Nuns Island, close to W bank of the River Corrib and to NW of Galway town (GA094-100----). Founded in 1649 by Franciscan Nuns or Convent of Poor Clares on a site granted by the Corporation. Abandoned in 1653 but briefly reoccupied in 1660s. By c. 1691 the nuns occupied a house in Market St. within the town. No visible trace remains; the present convent on Nuns Island dates from 1825. St. Clare's Monastery on Nuns Island, founded in 1649 by the Franciscan Nuns or Convent of Poor Clares, was established on land granted by Galway Corporation. It is dedicated to St. Clare of Assisi and represents a significant religious and historical site associated with the Catholic community in 17th-century Galway.

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
