St Brigid's Roman Catholic Church

Freestanding three-bay barn-style Roman Catholic church, built 1832, refurbished 1853. Sacristy to north-east, belfry tower and porch attached to south-west nave elevation in 1962. Pitched slate roof, some cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls over render plinth course, with hammer-dressed stone quoins. Stone dressing to lancet windows and pointed arched doorcase in north-west elevation. Single window in south-west gable, pair of lancets in north-east gable. Attached belfry tower of four stages with stucco pilasters below open belfry stage with paired open lancets and hipped roof. Square-headed windows to lower stages. Double-leaf entrance door to belfry porch with stained glass tympanum. Interior having open timber roof with tie-beams, king and queen posts and struts to king posts, infill of timber sheeting. Some stained glass windows. Double-leaf nave doorway of three panels per leaf and slatted timber over door. Post-Vatican II altar and reredos. Gallery across western bay, confessionals ranged underneath, having timber columns with annulus supporting gallery. Recent timber bench seats. Church set within graveyard, bounded by render plinth walls with ironwork railings, having square-profile rendered gabled piers flanking single and double-leaf ironwork gates.

An example of a Roman Catholic barn-style church retaining much of its original form and materials. The direct entrance to the rear nave elevation is not usual and reflects the earlier custom whereby men and women used separate entrances. The twentieth-century belfry tower adds interest to the setting of church and churchyard. The church stands at a prominent T-junction location with a road approaching directly from the south-east, and adds considerable definition to the architectural character of the area.
