St Anthony's Well is associated with St Anthony of Padua, a 13th-century Franciscan saint venerated in Scotland for his role as a patron of the poor and a healer. Holy wells dedicated to him often feature traditions of water cure, particularly for ailments of the stomach and livestock, and may involve rituals such as making the sign of the cross in the water or carrying it home for later use.
