St Andrews Castle stands at the Scores in Fife, a medieval ruin where stone chambers still face the sea. The exact location is known, yet entry is not guaranteed, leaving the castle half-hidden behind permission and distance. St Andrews Castle was built in the late 15th century by Archibald Douglas, 5th Earl of Angus, and later held by the Stewart kings of Scotland. It is important as the site of the University of St Andrews, one of the oldest universities in the English-speaking world, and as a former royal residence.
