Spofforth Castle rose from an Anglo-Saxon manor into a double-storey stone hall where the de Percy family may have drafted the Magna Carta before King John sealed it elsewhere. The castle endured royal favours, Scottish capture, civil-war damage and abandonment, yet its ruined chambers still stand on a rocky outcrop above the River Spaw.
