This blue commemorative plaque records: Broughton Lane / Attercliffe Common. Spence Broughton the highwayman, was hung in chains near here in 1796 close to the scene of his crime. He is thought to be the last man in England to be so punished. Recorded plaque organisation: Sheffield City Council.
Spence Broughton was a notorious highwayman executed in 1796; he is believed to be the last person in England to have been hanged in chains as a deterrent near the site of his crimes.
