Sparogue

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Sparogue is a lost standing stone in County Mayo, remembered only through local tradition. The land is now pasture, its surface claim erased, but the story keeps the stone upright in the mind. Forgetting is common there. Meaning resists it.
In reclaimed pasture. No visible surface trace. Local tradition of standing stone. The above description has been derived from D. Lavelle (compiler), An Archaeological Survey of Ballinrobe and District including Lough Mask and Lough Carra. Lough Mask and Lough Carra Tourist Development Association (1994), No. 64. Date of upload: 15 October 2014

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
