Southampton Castle rose in the north-west corner of the town after the Norman conquest, beginning as a wooden motte and bailey before stone walls replaced timber. It watched the River Test and the busy wine docks, serving as a royal fortress and later a cannon-bearing defence against French raids. Richard II rebuilt it into a powerful stronghold, but the castle faded in the 16th century, was sold in 1618, and was eventually flattened for redevelopment. Only fragments remain hidden inside Southampton, yet the site still carries the weight of a fortress that once commanded one of England’s most important ports.
