South Ronaldsay, Halcro

Castle (medieval)

What is recorded here

Halcro stands on South Ronaldsay as a medieval castle, its stones still catching Orkney wind long after the builders left. It may have been a home, a guard post, or a small proud claim to land, but the absence of a clear chamber description keeps it slightly withheld. What is certain is that it belongs to Scotland's historic environment and still occupies the island's memory.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records South Ronaldsay, Halcro as Castle (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
