South Moreton Castle

South Moreton Castle stands as an eleventh-century Norman motte and bailey beside Mill Brook, its fifty-metre mound still rising above the village despite Victorian damage. Local tradition claims English Civil War victims sleep beneath that earth, giving the ancient soil a heavier, sadder purpose than mere defence. Six hundred metres north, a massive moated ditch may have contained Empress Matilda’s forces during the twelfth-century Anarchy, suggesting the village served as a military chokepoint rather than a quiet retreat. Together these ruins reveal a place where ordinary life repeatedly bent around the needs of warring kings.
