What is recorded here

This brushed metal commemorative plaque records: The South Gate. 1800 years ago the Romans built a wall with four gateways around the market town Noviomanus Reginorum (Chichester). This is the site of the medieval south gate, which was demolished in 1773. The original Roman gate was further east and its road led to Dell Quay.
The South Gate marks the site of a medieval gateway that once guarded one of the entrances to Chichester; originally, this area featured a Roman gate, reflecting the city's historical development from the Roman settlement of Noviomagus Reginorum.

A plaque record does not grant entry to a building or private land. View it from a public place unless permission is clearly given.
