South Cowton Castle rose around 1470 as a private fortress for Sir Richard Conyers, guarding a valley where royal wars still bled into ordinary life. Its thick rubblestone walls watched the neighbouring village fade into empty earthworks, leaving the castle and church as the last visible signs of human presence. That sudden loneliness still hangs above the ridge, as if the house were built not merely to keep out invaders but to keep company with the land itself.
