Sonya McGinn was born in Howth, County Dublin, on 17 December 1973, and later became the first Irish badminton player to compete at the Summer Olympics. She won nine Irish National Championships titles before travelling to Sydney in 2000, where she lost in the second round to Mia Audina of the Netherlands. A small coastal town gave birth to a woman who carried Irish badminton onto the world stage.
