Why this matters

SMS Cöln was a German light cruiser sunk on October 24, 1914, during the Battle of the Dogger Bank in World War I. The ship was torpedoed by the British submarine HMS E9 and sank quickly, resulting in the loss of 397 of her 692 crew members; its wreck now lies off the Orkney Islands and is a significant historical and archaeological site.
