Dunvegan Castle on Skye still keeps a walled garden and sundial, though no date or owner has been recorded for either. The wall may have excluded rain, thieves or unwanted attention, while the sundial measured daylight for people who never wrote their names down.

Dunvegan Castle on Skye was built and held by the Macleod clan, beginning as an early medieval stronghold and evolving over centuries into their principal seat. It is important as a symbol of the clan's historical power and as one of the oldest continuously inhabited castles in Scotland.
