The Second Bethlehem Hospital, also known as Bedlam, was established in 1676 as a new facility for the care of mentally ill patients, replacing the original hospital founded in 1247. It is significant as one of the earliest institutions in England dedicated to psychiatric care and played a key role in the development of mental health treatment and public perceptions of mental illness.
