Ravensworth coalmill stood 600m north east of Ravensworth Castle, crushing stone into meal for the castle kitchen and nearby farms. Men fed heavy millstones with river water or horse power, then scraped black powder into sacks while coal dust coated their clothes and lungs. The mill served the castle until larger industrial works replaced it, but its foundation and gear holes still mark the bank.
