Site of Halcro Castle (C13)

Archaeological place

What is recorded here

Halcro Castle rose in Orkney during the thirteenth century, a sharp-edged warning against the sea and sky. Its stones are gone, but the absence still cuts like a missing tooth. Perhaps it guarded a harbour, perhaps a family pride, perhaps both. The castle vanished, yet Orkney remembers the shape of what stood there.
Site of Halcro Castle (C13) is shown as a archaeological place on the public map of Orkney Islands. The saved point is the map point or the centre of its mapped shape.
