College

What is recorded here

Site of College is a college in Drumcliff South, County Sligo, Ireland. The college is no longer visible at ground level within Drumcliff graveyard, though the 1837 Ordnance Survey map still marked its site. Local tradition connects the college to the old Teampull Buidhe church now occupied by the Protestant church. Later map editions dropped the college name, leaving the 1837 mark as the clearest surviving record.
Within Drumcliff graveyard (SL008-084002-). There is no visible trace at ground level of this college. It is indicated on the 1837 OS 6-inch map as ‘Site of College’, and is not shown on later map editions. The source of this record is a reference in the 1836 OS Letters: 'There is a tradition that an old church (SL008-084001-) stood where the Protestant church at Drumcliff now stands, which was called Teampull Buidhe. It is also said there was a college in it, which was much frequented by foreigners . . .' ((O'Flanagan 1933, 83 31-2). Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 3 November 2020

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
