Balrinnet Castle reduced to a grassed cairn in Kildare pasture, perhaps a tower house for one of the twelve sons of Horus Birmingham. The low circular ruin holds mortared stone beneath sod, beside a possible medieval field system and hollow-way. What is left is small enough to walk around, yet large enough to suggest that an entire family once scattered its pride across the same gentle land.

According to the OSL (Herity 2002, 33), ' … there is an old castle, none of which now remains, but an irregular heap of ruins. It is said that it was possessed by one of the 12 sons of Horus (Pierce) Birmingham, all of whom had castles in this neighbourhood'. On a low-lying, non-defensive site in open, very gently undulating pasture and associated with a possible medieval field system (KD003-003002-) and hollow-way (KD003-003003-). A low, circular grassed-over cairn (base diam. 10m; upper surface diam. 2m; H 2.7-3m) with some undressed, mortared-stone projecting through the sod cover is all that survives of what may have been a tower house. Site of Balrinnet Castle was likely held by a descendant of Pierce Birmingham, one of the 12 sons of Horus (Pierce) Birmingham, in the late medieval period. It is remembered for its historical association with this prominent local family, though the structure no longer remains.
