Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson rescued Sissinghurst Castle from prison scars and farm neglect in 1930, shaping broken ground into garden rooms where the White Garden still starts with white light and ends in amber shade. The place remembers brutality, patience and love: soldiers damaged it, workhouse ropes cut it back, then two writers gave it axes, borders and a life. It is not a pretty postcard; it is a wound that learned to bloom.
