Daniel Dixon was born in Larne on 28 March 1844, the son of a merchant and shipowner. He joined his father's timber business in 1864, later becoming head of one of Ireland's largest shipowning companies. Dixon served as Lord Mayor of Belfast in three terms and represented Belfast North in Parliament from 1905 until his death in 1907.
