Siege of Carrickfergus

Schomberg's army landed at Carrickfergus on 13 August 1689 and immediately turned its guns on the castle that had sheltered Jacobite troops through the spring. For a week the garrison of Charles MacCarthy More and Cormac O'Neill held the ramparts against overwhelming odds, buying time for the wider retreat toward Newry. When they finally surrendered on 27 August, they marched out with the honours of war, leaving behind two hundred dead and a fortress that had done exactly what it was built to do: delay.
