Shoulsbury Castle is the largest hillfort on Exmoor, a rectangular double-rampart enclosure clinging to a western spur at 472 metres. Its unusual shape resembles nearby Roman fortlets, yet the Dumnonii occupied the exposed moor from the Iron Age into the early Saxon period. Henry Wollcombe called the whole hill a morass in 1839, warning that even dry seasons demanded careful footing. People may have stood on those damp ramparts watching rain move across the common, turning defence into endurance.
