Shoreham Fort is the original Palmerston design, completed in 1857 with a curved wall that later forts copied. It stands at the mouth of the Adur, where gun platforms looked out to sea and tunnels ran beneath the earth. Two women once lived in a nearby iron hut for decades, and volunteers carried that hut across the district to keep it alive. The fort still holds that much human life: military ambition, domestic patience and local care.
