Sherlockstown Church (Site of)

Church

What is recorded here

Sherlockstown Church vanished completely, its foundations cleared away until no stone or marker remained above the soil. It stood in a graveyard in County Kildare, belonging to the Order of St John of Jerusalem, and resembled the churches at Bodenstown and Kerdiffstown. The complete disappearance is not a mistake of memory but a finished act of erasure. People may have prayed there, buried their dead there, and then removed every trace as if the church had never existed at all.
In a graveyard (KD014-043003-). According to the OSL (Herity 2002, 46 (141)), 'The old Parochial Church of Sherlockstown, has been entirely from the foundation cleared away'. Sherlock (1899-1902, 298) commented on the church's similarity to the churches at Bodenstown (KD014-041----) and Kerdiffstown (KD019-006----). In 1985 there was no visible surface trace of the church which, according to the owner, belonged to the Order of St John of Jerusalem (SMR file).
