What is recorded here

Castle Battery on Shapinsay kept a first engine room behind its defences, a small hot chamber where fire and water became motion for weapons no longer visible. The battery faced the sea, but the engine room faced men: someone must have listened for knocks, judged heat, and answered the machine before answering a gun. That is the shape of the place, a military chamber reduced to maintenance, fear and repetition.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Shapinsay, Castle Battery, No.1 Engine Room as Engine House (20th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
