Half a mile east of Brougham Castle, a forgotten settlement waits beneath the grass. It belongs to the official list of protected places, yet no path marks it and no gate welcomes you. The land may hide rooms, hearths or bones from before the castle rose. To walk there uninvited would be to steal from the dead, not to explore them.
