Settlement deserted

Settlement deserted, medieval

What is recorded here

Lea Castle still stands beside the buried town, but the fields around it have taken back most of what was built there. The new town of Leys appeared in records in 1232, drew royal soldiers and hundreds of horses by 1279, and was burning under O'Connor siege by 1307. What remains is a castle, a churchyard, faint earthworks, and the memory of a great ash tree where people once danced on Whit-Monday.
Unlocated settlement within the townland as mentioned in the OS letters where it is referred to in a sixteenth century land grant to Robert Piggott of the Disarte as the 'towne and lands of Rahinaspeke al' Rahiniskdugh-mullegan' (O'Flanagan 1933, vol. 1, p. 97) Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 17 December 2007

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
