In 1307 the O'Connors of Offaly burned Ley and besieged its castle, beginning the collapse of a town that had hosted royal armies decades earlier. By 1323 most burgages lay waste, though a vast ash tree still marked the ground where people gathered to dance on Whit-Monday. The tree decayed, the fair vanished, and the fields reclaimed what fire and forgetting had loosened.
