Settlement deserted

In intensively improved pasture, on an ENE-facing slope. Many irregular undulations visible but with no discernible pattern or identifiable features. Located almost equidistant between church and graveyard (TS061-095002- and TS061-095008-) to NW, 16th/17th century house (TS061-095003-) and enclosure (TS061-095004-) to SW and moated site (TS061-095005-) to SE. Earthworks close to W, may also be associated with this deserted settlement. Identified by Cambridge University as remains of deserted settlement on aerial photographs (CUCAP AIE 2, 4, 6 22/08/1963; CUCAP July 1966) and confirmed by field survey (Cahill 1975, ref. A272). Cahill (1982) reiterates, 'Extensive remains of a deserted village identified by air photography and field inspection.' Leo Swan has identified few visible remains via recent aerial photography (ASIAP (35) 14, 15, 16, 03/08/1996) due to land improvements. According to Simington (1931, 204), Ballyduagh contains a thatched house, some cabins and a park of Ash trees covering two plantation acres. According to Mitchell (1986, 175; plate 39), aerial photography shows a deserted village in the form of the, 'outlines of houses with gardens at the top of the village street.'
