Overview

Settlement cluster in Quinagh is recorded as Settlement cluster at Quinagh. It preserves evidence of a place used for homes, seasonal shelter, farming or shared daily work. The source record also describes the surviving evidence; its details are kept below.

Who lived here and when

The record identifies Settlement cluster in Quinagh as Settlement cluster. It does not safely name every person, family or worker who used it, or fix all phases to exact years.

Homes and daily life

The recorded type points to a place used for homes, seasonal shelter, farming or shared daily work. That explains the likely everyday purpose without claiming people, tools or customs that the exact record does not prove.

What was found

The saved source says: On a low prominent N-S ridge. A complex of possible house sites, small haggards and larger fields visible as cropmarks on satellite imagery (OS Ireland: Map Genie Imagery, 2013-2018) identified and reported by Jean-Charles Caillère. This settlement occupies a raised area, which appears to largely equate with a roughly curvilinear enclosure (dims. c. 250m N-S; c. 240m E-W) on the 1st ed. OS 6-inch map. ‘Quinagh Grave Yard’ (CW007-035001-) is indicated immediately S of the SW portion of the enclosure, however, on the cropmarks extend c. 60m W and c. 170m S of the burial ground. There is no surviving evidence of a church associated with the burial ground, however, its position in relation to the settlement cropmarks would suggest that there was a church there to serve the associated community. Why it ended

The saved record does not establish one certain ending. A change in farming, water level, trade, fuel, ownership, route or settlement pattern may have ended the use, but no single cause is claimed without evidence.

Why it mattered

Settlement cluster in Quinagh fixes a real piece of work or daily life to an exact place. Even where names are lost, its remains show how people obtained food and materials, organised land, made homes or adapted to the local ground.
