Séipéal Bhréanainn [Saint Brendan's Catholic Church]

Freestanding cruciform-plan gable-fronted Gothic Revival Roman Catholic church, dated 1903, of rusticated limestone, having four-bay nave, transept at north of same height as nave, and sacristy at south in place of second transept. High-pitched slated roof with limestone copings and cross finials to gables, and bellcote to west gable partly projecting from gable and supported on shallow pilasters with moulded bases terminating at level of windows above entrance, and stone brackets supporting square-section guttering. Rusticated walls have limestone skirting with concrete base-mould, and lateral buttresses to gable-front. Pointed windows to nave and triple-light windows to gable-front and to east end, with concrete sills and heads, and leaded glazing. Sacristy has canted-headed window with concrete head. Gable-front has wide triangular-headed concrete arch, with limestone hood-moulding, holy water stoups set into walls on either side, and double-leaf timber doors. Segmental-headed doorcase to sacristy. Interior has arch-braced timber trussed roof with openwork detailing to spandrels and supported on hanging posts and corbels, pointed arch to chancel. Framed priests' vestments on display to inteiro. Rubble limestone boundary walls, with stile to south-west corner, square-plan piers to vehicular entrance with double-leaf metal gates.

This early twentieth-century church is a good example of the Gothic Revival style. It displays an early use of concrete in the basemould, and the sills and heads of the windows. It is similar in many ways to Headford Catholic church, though on a smaller scale. The high quality of stonework is typical of its era, as is the fine arch-braced timber truss roof.
