Séamus Downey

Séamus Downey, born in Banbridge on 13 June 1960, is the only amateur Irish cyclist to compete at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. He qualified while teaching at St Malachy's High School in Castlewellan, finishing 43rd in the road race before returning to Northern Ireland for the 1986 Commonwealth Games. His sons Mark and Sean later won bronze medals in international cycling, continuing the family's competitive tradition.
