This blue commemorative plaque records: The Town Hall. Built in 1720 as a Market House. In 1770 an incident involving Messrs Scott and Shepherd took place here, the resulting court case is cited in defining the Law of Tort. By 1785 the arches had been filled in and the extension added.
Scott v Shepherd was a legal case concerning accidental injury at this site, significant for establishing principles in the law of negligence, a key aspect of tort law.
