Sapcote Castle stood as a Norman motte and bailey where playing fields now lie, holding the Bassett family through wars and purgatory. Ralph Bassett fought at Crecy in 1346, then paid three chaplains to pray his soul free of flame. The earthy mound and moats resisted forgetting until the twentieth century, when human hands finally smoothed them into grass.
