There was formerly a fishery on the Salmon Leap. This comprised an artificial obstruction across the course of the river. In 1207 King John granted Adam de Hereford 'all the salmon fishery of the salmon leap'; also in 1562 Elizabeth granted William Vernon 'two fishing places, called the Salmon Leap' (Went 1954, 55-56).
