Saint George Hare was born in Limerick in 1857 and spent three years under Nicholas Brophy at the Limerick School of Art before moving to London. He painted “Death of William the Conqueror,” won a gold medal for it in 1886, and helped found the Chelsea Arts Club in 1891. A dentist’s son from Ipswich and a mother from County Wexford became an Irish painter remembered for history painting, portraits and teaching.
