What is recorded here
Kinloch Castle on Rum keeps a twentieth-century squash court beside its main rooms. The hard flat wall and marked floor turn castle leisure into physical practice, where a small rubber ball returns quickly in a narrow chamber. Occupants may have played there after dinner or before bed, measuring endurance against stone instead of sitting in darkness. The court still belongs to the castle, not to a separate public building, and it records the human body inside a remote Highland house.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Rum, Kinloch Castle, Squash Court as Squash Court (20th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Rum, Kinloch Castle, Squash Court was built in the 20th century as part of the Kinloch Castle estate, which was constructed by the Cadogan family, later the Earls of Cadogan, during their ownership of the island of Rum. The squash court reflects the leisure facilities provided for the estate's residents and visitors during the early 20th century.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
